The IBA has announced Paweł Marcin Gołębiowski as the winner of the inaugural David W Rivkin Fellowship

Paweł Marcin Gołębiowski, is the recipient of the newly established David W Rivkin Fellowship following his participation in the International Bar Association (IBA) internship programme in London, United Kingdom and a tripartite competition. The Fellowship, which includes a monetary award and mentorship, was created in honour of former IBA President David W Rivkin, whose served in the role from 2015 to 2016.

Paweł Marcin Gołębiowski commented, ‘I am honoured and privileged to have been selected as the inaugural David W Rivkin Fellow. The opportunity to be Mr Rivkin’s mentee is invaluable not solely for his vast experience in international treaty and public international law litigation, but also because of his genuine concern for the advancement of young lawyers such as myself. The Fellowship certainly enhances the IBA internship programme to give an even more comprehensive start to a legal career. I cannot overstate how valuable the internship has been to me, and equally I cannot recommend it highly enough to others.’

David W Rivkin, said: ‘I am honoured that the IBA and Debevoise & Plimpton have established this Fellowship in my honour. Throughout my legal career, I have enjoyed mentoring young lawyers. This Fellowship will assist young lawyers as they receive an outstanding experience as IBA interns working on some of the most important issues of our time. I look forward to getting to know each of them and to following them in their promising careers.’

Prior to the IBA internship in the IBA Executive Director’s office, Paweł Marcin Gołębiowski had undertaken an internship at the United Nations, trained at The Hague Academy of International Law and achieved a Masters Degree in Law in Public International Law from University College London.

David W Rivkin, an independent arbitrator affiliated with Arbitration Chambers in New York, London and Hong Kong has long been recognised as a global leader in international arbitration. Mr Rivkin is a retired partner from the law firm Debevoise & Plimpton LLP where he practised private and public international law for more than 40 years. At the firm he served as Co-Chair of its International Dispute Resolution Group for more than 20 years and was a founder of its Business Integrity/ESG Group. Among his other public positions, he is a Trustee of the IBA-created eyeWitness to Atrocities.

The Fellowship is open to all IBA interns based in the Association’s London office. Law students around the world can apply for the following internships in the:

  • Legal Policy & Research Unit, which undertakes research and develops and implements innovative strategies, projects and initiatives that are relevant to business and the rule of law inter alia;
  • IBA's Human Rights Institute, which promotes and protects human rights and the independence of the legal profession worldwide; and
  • Executive Director’s Office, where the role of the intern includes undertaking research, speech writing and contributing to academic papers.

The application process for 2025 April–June internships and the David W Rivkin Fellowship is now open. It will close on Friday 22 November 2024. Applicants have to be successful in achieving a place as a London-based IBA intern to be eligible for the Fellowship. All Fellowship applicants are asked to submit a thousand-word essay in English on the role of lawyers in society for the Fellowship – What is the most important impact lawyers have? Candidates who advance to the second round will be asked to submit a video on their career aspirations and answer a technical question about a topic in law.
